The weird experience of having 62 thousand people hit your blog

One of the most useful things about syndicated feeds (RSS) is the ability to know when someone has linked back to your articles on their blog. So when this little nugget pinged back to me, you can imagine my delight at having ruffled such self-important feathers.

Most people who commented on the picture of a solder holding an upside down flag carrying an anti-war message, which I posted a few days ago, chose to ignore the truism of the graffiti’s wording, “There is no flag large enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people”, and focus instead on how it’s all Barack Obama’s fault. Proving once and for all there’s no ignorance quite as baffling as that of a racist redneck, fired up by a hockey mom from Jesus land.

Some commentators picked up on the fact that the image was clearly of a solder who had captured the offending flag from people who would do him and his friends harm. Others questioned his patriotism for doing this, demonstrating perfectly the old adage, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make an idiot think for himself and look at what’s right in front of his face.

Some even managed to somehow turn the conversation around to bronze-age folklore on the morality of forcing rape victims to give birth. But onebeggarsbread falls into a category all of his own, which encircles all of the above and an uncanny inability to differentiate between fascism and the system of democracy which operates in my country, the oldest democracy in the world, a.k.a. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

This is very sad. Because on September the 12th, 2001, Queen Elizabeth broke with a hundreds of years old tradition of playing God Save The Queen at the changing of the guard, in the courtyard of Buckingham Palace, by instead playing The Star Spangled Banner. And in doing so, without saying a word, gave a clear message to her Prime Minister that her country’s determination to stand, in the words of Tony Blair at the time, “shoulder to shoulder with America”, in her finding and bringing to justice those responsible for the attacks on New York and Washington, was not only the right thing to do for a friend, but particularly because that friend was America.

Eight years later and the Bush administration has failed to find Bin Laden, ruled inadmissible evidence in the inquiry which would have found who paid for the attacks and systematically shat from a great height upon the constitution. They have started a war in a country which had nothing to do with 9/11, used lies and corruption as a means of stripping freedoms and rights from the people and presided over the worst economic depression in living memory.

If that is the America people like onebeggarsbread are so proud of, there are a few billion people around the world, millions of whom are eligible to vote in the American presidential election, who have a loud and clear message they’d like onebeggarsbread and his friends to hear, and I have great faith that on November the 4th, 2008, that is exactly what they will do.

Here’s my original reply to onebeggarsbread’s comments, in case he doesn’t approve them on his own blog…

I’m reminded of the words by a composite character from bronze age folklore; “That which you do to the least of my brethren, that you do unto me”. What the far right has done to the most deserving of our help, in your country and mine, is nothing short of evil. That a man from one of the traditionally most oppressed groups is so far ahead in the polls tells you everything you need to know about the feelings of your fellow countrymen on these wilfully ignorant and hateful views you so adamantly insist are the basis upon which your country was built. They are not. You are wrong. You are the tyrannical minority The Second Amendment was designed to protect the hard working majority from.

Anyone who believes this right wing garbage has even an ounce of truth to it is way beyond capable of listening to anything I have to say. But assuming you approve this comment, I would leave you with my abiding hope, that one day you and your kind wake up to the deep embarrassment you’re causing to the honest free thinking people of your once fine nation. This is blatant racism and in my country it would put you in jail. Which isn’t such a bad thing for a jumped up little missile base off the coast of France, which spends most of it’s military budget on making America look like it has friends. It doesn’t. You’re the reason. Wake up. Read books. Think for yourself. In that order.
