Electronic music pioneer’s archive unearthed

Posted by Jim Gardner on July 18, 2008

Delia Derbyshire is best know as the genius behind the original 1960s recording of the Doctor Who theme tune, written by Ron Grainer. She famously left the Radiophonic Workshop with the introduction of synthesisers, believing that they made the whole process too easy – preferring instead the technique she was largely responsible for inventing, of cutting up and splicing together sections of tape containing recordings of everything from tin lampshades to backwards reverberating voices.

Now an archive of Derbyshire’s early experiments and demo tapes have been unearthed, including one from the 1960’s, which almost sounds like a modern day electronic dance track; complete with looping hi-hats and four to the floor kick drum.

You can read more on the slow process of making the archive public and the exciting prospect of commissioning new recordings from the works at www.delia-derbyshire.org and the original article on the BBC web site http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7512072.stm
